Terence Oliver, film producer and graphics genius at the BJ, the Plain Dealer and elsewhere, and wife Dr. Greta Oliver, celebrated their 38^th wedding anniversary.

“Where did 38 years go? Happy Anniversary, as I would do it all over again, Fun times and great memories together, Babe. Thank God for His many blessings! Our scripture from day one:

They have four children.

Greta also wrote  books “College Roadmaps,” tips for first-to,ecollege students and their families, and “Career Road Map,” about reaching career aspiratioms.

 

Teremce had a hand in Pulizer Prizes at the BJ (Question of Color) and Miami Herald (Hurricane Andrew series).

 

He’s on the North Carolina Journaiism School faculty after forays at MIT, University of Arizona, Duke and Tufts.

Terence has received 50 awards and probably needs to add a room to his house to hold them all.

 

He even designed a auto racing car!

 

He graduated from Michigan’s Ferris State, got his masters at Ohio University, was adjunct professor at Kent State (1992-94), rose to assistant managing editor during year years at the BJ (1996-2001) and was editorial artist at the Plain Dealer (1988-91).

Jim Carney, the nicest guy I’ve ever met, and Katie Byard are celebrating their 36^th wedding anniversary.

“Three dozen years together. The assistant bureau chief and her assistant are forever grateful.

 

“Today Alfred, the bureau chief, takes his assistants on a field trip on some blue highways in Ohio to celebrate.

 

“We were married in a big room on the third floor of the Tavern of Richfield and served cocktail weenies and meatballs and cheese and crackers and water chestnuts wrapped in bacon and beer and wine and soda pop to our guests.

 

“We went to New Orleans for our honeymoon.

 

“As Alfred McMoore used to say:

 

“Ain’t it a blessing?”

“Thank you, friends.”

Jim’s mother was a Rockynol nurse when it opened in 1966 and stayed till 1986. His dad spent the last 2 years of life there with Parkinson’s.

Kudos to Jim & Katie. There’s no couple more deserving.

Former BJ op ed editor Bob Springer and Barbara Hipsman Springer celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary on Friday, Sept. 1 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Barbara posted:

 

“Yep… let’s see September 1, 1979… happy anniversary to the sweetest guy ever. You put up with my schemes and moods and downright tomfoolery. To another 50 or 50? Happy Anniversary to US! (Thanks Liz Poppens Denius for the timely shot!)”

Trivia:

Bob Springer’s father studied accounting in night school at Loyola in Chicago for a time, but didn't finish. With four kids to feed (four boys in 38 months from birth of first to birth of fourth -- yikes), no surprise there. One of his classmates was Bob Newhart.

Bob also was on the Kent State faculty at one time. Barbara retired from Kent State in 2013 after 26 years in Journalism and Mass Communication.

26^th wedding anniversary for Kerry Clawson

BJ arts writer and critic Kerry Coughlin Clawson and Steve Clawson celebrated their 26^th wedding anniversary.

Kerry began at the BJ in 1991. She also was the BJ’s Mad Shopper, succeeding Mary Ethridge in that position in 2006, and retail business writer.

She has won Cleveland Press Club awards for her writing at the BJ.

JANE SNOW AND TONY KAWAGUCHI CELEBRATE 16th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

Jane Snow, the best BJ food writer (and there was plenty of excellent competition) in history, and Japanese native and sushi chef Tony Kawaguchi celebrated their 16^th wedding anniversary at Henry Wahner’s in Kent, a restaurant Jane reviewed for the BJ more than 30 years ago.

Quips Jane: ‘It’s just as good as when I reviewed it. Tony has held up well, too.”

When Jane walked into Tony’s Sushi Katsu restaurants in the Merriman Valley, where I have enjoyed the cuisine from time to time, Tony swept her off her feet when he hugged her into the air and said, “You’re going to be my girlfriend.”

Two weeks later, they were engaged. The next year, they were married.

When a sushi chef marries a food writer you know that’s a match made in cuisine heaven.

There were two Snows who were BJ food wrtiers. The first was Glenna Snow, whose 1944 “Glenna Snow’s Cook Book” has been purchased for decades and decades.

BJ readers thought for decades that Glenna and Joan were related. They aren’t. Just had Snow for a surname.

In between was Polly Paffilas, Charlene Nevada and Connie Bloom.

Glenna retired from the BJ in 1944. Jane, who started at the BJ in 1979, in 2006.

Jane once told me:

“Glenna Snow’s son called me once from his home in Biloxi, Mississippi. He wanted to know why the BJ was still using his mother’s name. Her cookbook usually can be found at The Bookseller in Wallhaven.”

MITCH & KIM McKENNEY CELEBRATE 28th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

Kent State graduate Mitch McKenney, one of many who went from the BJ (after 18 years) to the Kent State University faculty (in 2008), and Kim McKenney celebrated their 28^th wedding anniversary Saturday, November 19.

Mitch posted:

”28 years later, still smiling. I love you, Kim!”

They spent their 2017 wedding anniversary in Paris, appropriately The City of Love. Paula Tucker and I spent a week in Paris for one of our living-together anniversaries.

Mitch joined the BJ in 1998 as a deputy Metro editor, and later features editor and online editor.

He came to the Beacon after stops at the Palm Beach (Florida) Post and the Rochester (New York) Times-Union.

Mitch is associate professor and student media adviser at Kent State School of Media and Journalism.

Mitch and Kim live in Hartville. Their children are Brynn McKenney, also a Kent State graduate who still lives in Kent; Connor McKenney, a Kent State graduate living in Hartville as is an elementary school teacher, and Suzanne McKenney Newman.

Mitch and I had a pleasant chat at the BJ Newsroom Alumni reunion at Wingfoot Park this year.

MARK, OH MARK OH, WHEREFORE ART THOU? 40 YEARS OF MARRIAGE FOR DAWIDZIAKS

 

Former BJ pop culture critic Mark Dawidziak and his co-star for life, Sara Showman, both in marriage and on stage, celebrated their 40^th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 9.

 

Mark posted:

 

“Forty years ago today . . . Oct. 9, 1982. We had met about a year before . . . we'd done two plays together during the next twelve months . . . and then we made the co-star billing official. I've never stopped telling the world how incredibly fortunate and blessed I am. I suppose a 40th anniversary is a special day for taking note of such things, but the truth is that I celebrate this every day.”

 

The co-star in the Large Literary Theater Company productions – Twain, Poe, Civil War, etc. – around Ohio and in other states.

 

Their cat is named Poe. Yes! Forevermore!

 

Mark’s book about Edgar Allan Poe will hit the light of day on February 14, 2023.

 

Mark once expressed my opinion of my BJ days in giving his memories of 44 E. Exchange Street:

 

I'm glad we knew journalism when newspapers mattered, and I'm glad we knew a thriving Beacon Journal. We will not see their like again. We were incredibly fortunate.

 

Indeed, Mark. Incredibly fortunate. As are you and Sara to have found each other on stage and exited stage right into a 40-year marriage.

35th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY FOR KATIE BYARD CARNEY AND JIM CARNEY

 

Jim Carney and Katie Byard Carney will celebrate their 35^th wedding anniversary on Thursday, September 29.

Happy 35th @legumecarney! Thank you for all the joy - being such a great dad, Papaw and uncle and dog daddy; the laughs; morning coffee; hunts for my glasses and keys; walks; errands (with and without me), advice when I wanted and also when I didn’t think I needed it, but did; Jimmy-made eggs, veggie burgers, goulashes and French martinis (and you don’t even drink!); your music and movie knowledge, your patience when I just want to watch an old Perry Mason or Law & Order; your adventuring with me; your love of interviewing strangers; your reminders about sending thank yous; your accounting skills; you love of my family snd friends;your patience with my sports illiteracy; your love of Swensons, Skyway, DeVitis; your world view; your generosity, your kindness; your letting me be me; your patience (sometimes) when I want to linger at the restaurant or museum; your mad photography and writing skills; your handmade cards, your decorated rocks, - am I at 35 things yet? Jim and Katie both were Beacon Journal reporters hired by Tim Smith and Keith McKnight. Fellow reporter Bill Hershey, never without a pet dog, put Katie’s rental car on his credit card to get her to Akron for the interview. Bill and Katie both worked in the BJ’s Columbus bureau.

Jim also dabbled in being on local radio, even after his retirement from the BJ. Katie is into drag boat racing.

Katie recalls that wedding day in 1987:

 

“It was a beautiful fall day in Richfield. Jim and I decided it would be fun to dress up like a couple from the 50s (we were ahead of the curve when it came to themed events!), make Patrick, Will and Michael dress up like little maitre d’s, enjoy the evening with a bunch of friends in the upper room of the Richfield Tavern, share too many cocktail weenies with the group, cut a cake from the fab Budd's Bakery in Akron (decorated with Mickey and Minnie Mouse) and say ‘I do.’ Other stuff from Common Book of Prayer, thank u very much.

 

"Miss those who were there and are no longer with us. Blessed for those still supporting us and new friends we have made along the way. Blessed to share my life with Jimmy.”

Then they zipped off to their New Orleans honeymoon.

I encountered Jim more than once when the daffodils were in bloom at Summit Metro Park’s Daffodil Trail in Furnace Run on Brush Road in Richfield. We both are daffy about daffodils.

SANDY BEE LYNN CELEBRATES 32ND WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

Former BJ Librarian Sandra Louise Fuller Bee Lynn and Glenn Lynn celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary Thursday, July 1.

 

Sandy posted:

 

32 YEARS with "This Guy." He's taken me all over the world and wherever we are, it's always special because I'm with him.

Glenn - I love you the most!!

 

Like me, they have traveled the world, including skiing in Austria, to South Africa, to Holland, the Scandanavian countries and, a fun place, Niagara Falls.

 

When they’re not traveling they live in Doylestown.  Sandy is on viola with the winds in the New Horizons Band in Cuyahoga Falls. Glenn once played saxaphone with the main band.

 

They met at a summer meeting of a ski club that traveled to Put-In-Bay at a time when the only skiing possible was on the water.

 

Sandy’s siblings are Ron Fuller and Tim Fuller. Ron lives in Barberton with wife Mary Clark Fuller. Tim lives in Akron.

 

Sandy’s children are Wendy Bee and Andy Bee. Both live in Akron.  She has three grandchildren: Jennifer, married to Jason Anderson and living in Akron; Heather Trimble, who lives in Akron; and Shiloh Hastings.

Sandy has one great-grandchild, Maxine (“Max”).

 

After she left the BJ, Sandy was a librarian in Orrville and Wadsworth.

 

Sandy’s father, the late Henry Fuller, parachuted into France on D-Day. He was among 126 survivors of the 792 who jumped with the 502^nd on The Longest Day.

 

Former BJ assistant managing editor/art director Terence Oliver and Dr. Greta Oliver celebrated their 35^th wedding anniversary Sunday, January 4.

Since then here is a little fun trivia about kids, grandkids, travel, job titles, houses, businesses, cars, degrees, books over the years (even though there was so much more):

 

Job titles: Art director, assistant managing editor, professor, college administrator, trainer.

 

Education: We had 3 college degrees, but earned 3 additional ones (TO, masters, GO Masters and PhD)

 

Travel: Tons of travel all over, including 30 trips to Hawaii (mostly as a couple, but two with parents, two with kids, and a few with friends).

 

Kids: Two boys and two girls

 

Mentoring: Thousands of students between the two of us.

 

Businesses: 5 (three current businesses, Elite Execution Design, Simple Told Design, Oliver Consulting).

 

Cars types: Chevy, Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Cadillac, Lincoln, Bentley, Jaguar, Buick, Mazda, and Nissan.

 

Houses: 6 (Maple Heights, Macedonia twice, Albany, Durham, Chapel Hill).

 

Grandkids: four.

 

Kids married: 4

 

Books: 1 (Greta’s new book College Blueprint due out soon). *Terence’s motivation book, probably next year.

 

Mission trips: Kenya, South Africa and Paris.

 

There is so much more...

 

Good job, Terence, with writing the article for me and your choice of a lifetime spouse.

49th wedding anniversary to remember

Anniversary interrupted for Char and Art

Retired BJ reporter Charlene Nevada and retired BJ chief artist Art Krummel were going to celebrate their 49^th wedding anniversary. But Art wound up with emergency Pacemaker surgery. He’s home now so all went well, Char reports.

Their daughter, Beth Krummel Meese, posted:

45th wedding anniversary for Jeff Sallot

Former BJ reporter Jeff Sallot and Rosemarie Boyle celebrated their 45^th wedding anniversary today.

Jeff posted:

“Today is our 45th wedding anniversary. So much joy and happiness over the years. Jeff and Rosemarie.”

Previously, Kent State graduate Jeff, who had a major role in the BJ’s Pulitzer-winning coverage of the 1970 National Guard shooting of 4 Kent State students and wounding of 9 others as a BJ summer intern and campus stringer for the Beacon, told me:

“My marriage with Rosemarie is the most important thing that has happened to me. We live in Ottawa, Rosemarie's hometown, and have two wonderful grown children. Mike, our eldest, is two hours away in Montreal. Kate lives here in Ottawa.

“My son from my first marriage, Ken, is happily married to a wonderful woman. They live in Gainesville, Florida.

“I joined the reporting staff at The Toronto Star after leaving the Beacon Journal in June 1971. I was transferred to their Parliamentary bureau in Ottawa in 1972.

“I met Rosemarie at the Star. She's a journalist, too.

“By 1974 Rosemarie and I were both back in Toronto, working for The Globe and Mail, a remarkable national newspaper. I stayed at the Globe for 32 years.

“Most of those years were in foreign or national bureaus. At various times I was the bureau chief in Moscow, Ottawa and Edmonton. I figured once that I have covered stories in more than 30 countries and every province and territory in Canada.

“There were a couple of timeouts from daily journalism to do fellowships at the Canadian Centre for Arms Control and, in China and Japan, with the Asia Pacific Foundation.

“I retired from the Globe to join the faculty at the Carleton University School of Journalism and Communication. I teach multimedia reporting.” Carleton is in Ottawa.

 

It was Jeff who confirmed that only students were shot, and not National Guardsmen as other media incorrectly reported. The BJ went with Jeff’s version. Eventually, so did all of the media in America.

 

39th wedding anniversary for Mark & Sara Dawidziak

Former BJ and PD TV critic Mark Dawidziak and Sara Showman Dawidziak are celebrating their 39^th wedding anniversary today.

 

Mark and Sara met when they were both in the cast of Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor” in Tennessee. A year later, there was a Mark-Sara wedding in Johnston City, Tennessee, where Mark was working on the Kingsport Times-News.

 

To cement the courtship Mark showed “Psycho” during a film series he ran while they were dating. By comparison with Norman Bates it made Mark look so good that Sara took the bait.

 

Mark and Sara have been performing together, on stage and in private, ever since including with their Largely Literary theater company that takes on Edgar Alan Poe, Mark Twain, etc.

 

They have a photographer extraordinaire daughter, Becky.

The BJ plucked Mark in 1983 as irascible David Bianculli’s replacement for TV critic. Mark was best TV writer I had during my 16 years as TV editor and I had 3 good ones!

Before the BJ & the PD, Mark's career took him to the Kingsport Times-News in Tennessee,
the Bristol Herald Courier in Virginia, the Associated Press’ Washington bureau and Knight-Ridder Newspapers’  Washington bureau.

Mark is justifiably in the Cleveland Press Club’s Journalism Hall of Fame and writes books more often than he changes underwear, which is NOT a comment on his hygiene.

Mark was born in Huntington, New York (think Long Island), on September 7, 1956, a son of World War II Army Air Corps captain/navigator Joseph Walter Dawidziak, buried in Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island, and Claire Dawidziak. Later, Joe married Bernie Dawidziak.
