PD farewell for Regina Brett

Regina Brett, who has written more than 1,800 columns for the PD since 2000, typed her final column for That Newspaper North of Akron.

Before that, of course, Regina was a BJ columnist for 7 years.

Her book, “God Never Blinks,” has been published in 20 languages.

Regina was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2008 and 2009. She also hosted a couple of area radio shows.

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988, she wrote about her experiences and won national awards for the columns.

Her farewell column includes a thank-you tribute to Stuart Warner, writing coach among other job titles at the BJ and PD before slinking to Arizona with wife Debbie Van Tassel, another BJ expatriate who drove north to the PD.

Former Cleveland Press paperboy to retire as  Evansville publisher

Jack Pate launched his newspaper career as a paperboy for the Cleveland Press, will retire at the end of as president and publisher of the Evansville Courier & Press in Indiana.

The Pates have three children: Julia, a student at Castle High School; David, a student at Purdue University; and Jacklyn, an Indiana University graduate who works in sports marketing with The Marketing Arm in Dallas,Texas.

Pate’s great-grandfather hauled a printing press from Tennessee to Oklahoma via covered wagon in the 1800s. His father was a production executive with Scripps Howard, with jobs in Cleveland, Memphis and Pittsburgh, before retiring as general manager of the Stuart News in Florida. His brother Mike is a retired publisher of the Tallahassee Democrat in Florida.

Former Beacon Journal managing editor Mizell Stewart has career connections to the Pate brothers.

He wrote:

“Mike Pate gave me my first shot to run a newsroom at the Tallahassee Democrat. Jack Pate hired me to lead the news team at the Evansville Courier & Press and later encouraged me to go for a corporate role with The E.W. Scripps Company.”
