Goddammit: More & better local news!

When BJ newsroom retiree Tom Moore was makeup man, you could always tell how unhappy he was with the situation by the number of "goddammits" that cascaded from his mouth.

Tom's big thing has always been: More and better local news. Things haven't changed, as this Facebook exchange shows.

But there was a warmhearted reminder from Teresa Squire about her dad, the late BJ photographer and apple-grower extraordinary Ted Walls.

As for me, I think the BJ is doing an excellent job of providing local news within the very limiting resources of being down to fewer than 70 people in the newsroom, a far, far cry from the days of John S. Knight, Ben Maidenburg and Pat Englehart.

It's enough to make Doug Oplinger go from babyfaced reporter to graying  Managing Editor.

Check out the Facebook exchange:

hey, it's great that the Beacon Journal is finally bringing local news to the front of the A section...too bad it' still the same old stuff that barely was worth the metro front. So how about getting some local news worth the front? too bad that'll cost money for the reporters need to dig up such stuff.

  • Gary Pembrook there is akron life magazine and the west side leader newspaper.

  • Teresa Squire Dad (Ted Walls) always loved the challenge of finding a good story to tell through his photographs.

  • Gary Pembrook todays ABJ Friday 3-7 layout was a little better. more ads, but still very thin.
After reading this post, Tom added:

john:
welcome back to you and paula to the great cold north.
hey, i should have added that the local coverage provided by the talented folks still working there is outstanding, but you can only do such much in a day even if you're clark kent.
