BJ directory from 1959

There are a lot of familiar names on this 1959 Beacon Journal Directory of Employes. In earlier times there was no telephone directory of employees printed in booklet form. This one was printed on one newspaper size broadsheet about 15 by 23 inches. This copy was revised on September 15, 1959. Our thanks to Calvin Deshong who provided the sheet to us We will try to reprint the list of employes for each department starting this month with the 144 employees listed in the composing room. The list begins with William J. Church, foreman, and then continues alphabetically to the end with Donald H. Zarle. The list is too long to post on the blog, but you can see a copy of it by clicking on the headline above.

Even though I didn’t come to the BJ till 1968, there are a lot of memories for me in this list. Sadly, too many have departed for that Great Newspaper in the Sky.

Bidinger, Dean E. ............66 23rd st., Barb., VA-5-6676
Fun-loving Deano

Callahan, Francis David ...........1048 Oakland, WA-8-9562
Lefty cut more editors with his makeup knife than any other printer. It did keep the editors from touching the filmed “type.”

Catalano, Joseph A. ............ 1213 Clifton av., WA-3-4793
Cigar man. Good guy. We often enjoyed Italian food served up by Joe during the Italian-American Festival on Front Street in the Falls.

Costello, John : : .. :.... . . . . . . . .1335 Linden av., WA-3-4783
If it was Catholic, John was for it. Notre Dame being at the head of the list, of course, but St. Vincent was pretty high up, too. I once told him that, if he were a Methodist, he’d be rooting for SMU just as much as he does for Notre Dame.

Deshong, Calvin E. . . . R.D. 1, Phalanx Sta., 0., Warren TW-8-4824
Quiet master of the APS-4 room, the only place in the Beacon where you couldn’t smoke because the computers didn’t like it.

Earll, Charlotte ....:........ ... . .55 Rose blvd.
Lawdy, lawdy, Miss Charlotte!

Ellis, Roger L.. ..... 333 N.. Cleveland av., Mogadore, MA-8-3313
Credit Union man who also liked to bet on the horses. Interesting combination.

Farrell, Homer .................676 Prentiss av., PA-4-3483
Championship American Legion coach. Championship person, too.

Ferguson, Wm. ............... 1741 Manchester rd., SH-5-3630
Bill ran his kingdom with a friendly attitude, and did it well.

Furman, L. H. ........... 25; Brown st., Barberton, PL-3-5078 ,
Larry always complimented me. He said, and I agreed, that the Beacon should be paying me more because I was so good at my job. His passing really hurt.

Gorrell, William Alan ..... 3144 Oakwood dr., C. F., WA-3-5393
Beacon folks flocked to his Poor Bill’s complex on Siesta Key off Sarasota. By the time my late wife Monia and I started staying every February at Sea Castle, on the beach with a parking lot that faced the former (by then) Bill’s place, the doctors Bill managed the other complexes for had bought him out and changed the name.

Gresock, Richard . : . . . . . .423. Noble av., HE-4-3802
Dick & I worked together coordinating electronics between the newsroom and Composing.

Griffin, Robert Clyde .......236 FIlmore av., C. F., WA-3-9450
Bob once told me that he thought I was the best Makeup Man since Hal Taylor. Then he said, “No, you’re even better than Hal Taylor.” I consider that the greatest compliment I ever got at the Beacon. In retirement, Bob also told me, “Just hit the damn ball!” when he was in a golf group behind me at Brookledge Golf Course in Cuyahoga Falls. Bob liked to play fast, and he played so well that par was not unusual for Bob. He tore up the seniors leagues every year. Once a boxer, too.

Hess, Donald D. ........ 840 Horace av., Cuya. Falls, WA-3-0889
Don, under Ken Wright, also coordinated electronics stuff between Composing and the newsroom with me during my Electronics Coordinator days at the BJ.

Inch, John W.......2009 E. Bailey rd., Cuya. Falls, WA3-3841
Quality printer. Quality person.

Leitch, Robert W. ............. . 80 Wallhaven dr., UN-4-9743
World’s greatest proofreader.

Pack, Don ....................... 1595 Ada st., PR-3-2057
The go-to guy if you wanted to bet on sports. During my Siesta Key stays every February, Don would tidy up around the Sea Castle pool and tell me the latest country that he and his ladyfriend visited, or were going to visit. He drove a darn nice convertible, too. And I understand his ladyfriend’s house was impressive.

Reeves, Charles ... . . . . . . . . . . . 1011 Lacroix, FR-6-9571
Red’s favorite saying to me was, “You hemorrhoid!” I took it as a loving compliment. Red and I ushered in the age of Channels (which today looks nothing like the one Red and I put together every week).

Santoferraro, Cecil B. .:...:.:1726 Glenmount av., PA-4-6516
Pleasant, civil printer.

Sisley, Robert C. . .............533 Winfield Way, UN-4-0576
Another friendly sort although he could have used a belt to hold up his pants and hide his shirttail.

Skeens, Robert C. ................ 323 Tyson rd., MI-4-5988
Highly intelligent printer. I often wondered what he would have been if he weren’t a printer. Maybe an engineer or (ugh!) a lawyer.

Sprague, Sid Jr. .......... 2467 4th st., Cuya. Falls, WA-3-7134
We saw Sid often at Nicky’s Place, the Greek restaurant on Front Street owned by John, one of the two brothers who had a falling-out that led to another Nicky’s on Main Street.

Van Sickle, Jerold B. ............... 99 W. Long, BL-3-8503
Bowling’s top advocate.

Watson, Warren .............. 1466 Redwood av., PA-4-8814
One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

I didn't arrive until 1976, but I remember just about all those fine folks, and a few others:

Buerge, Virgil: King of the Coffee Klatch, making his weekly collections.

Efferson, Dale: The Quiet Millionaire poring over the Wall Street Journal in the Blue Room at lunch.

Eikleberry, Tom: Captain Ike they called him at Fairlawn Lanes in the Printcraft Bowling League.

White, Tommy: John, didn't he also hail from West Virginia??

I don't know if Tommy White was from West Virginia. I just know that Tom Melody and Scott Bosley were. And fellow WVU Journalism grads.
