Gwen Ifill |
“PBS NewsHour” co-host Gwen Ifill, 61, passed away. She had cancer.
When she took over “Washington Week,” Ifill became
the first African-American woman to host a major political TV talk show. She
covered seven presidential campaigns and moderated the vice presidential
debates in 2004 and 2008.
She advanced to “PBS NewsHour” in 2013. With
Judy Woodruff was Ifill’s co-anchor, it became the only all-female national
anchorship.
Ifill was a preacher's daughter. She was born
in New York City to a Panamanian immigrant dad and a Barabadian mother. She also
worked for the Baltimore Evening Sun, the Boston Herald American, the
Washington Post and the New York Times.
That’s an impressive resume.
