Gannett gashing gallops gruesomely

One-sixth of the Cincinnati Enquirer staff is taking a buyout rather than go through the indignity of re-applying for a job they’ve held for decades as Gannett subjugates the print side to the digital potential.

Gannett’s mouthpiece, editor Carolyn Washburn, says the new titles and new responsibilities and “fundamentally new jobs.” Yeah, right. And I’m the king of Utopia.

Those who take the buyouts will get one week’s pay for each year of service, with a cap of 36 weeks.

Among those preferring the buyout is managing editor Laura Trujillo, brought from the Arizona Republic by Washburn. Other buyouts form a Hall of Fame of Enquirer journalism.

This month alone Gannett has laid off 223 at 37 locations. That’s on top of 1,400 jobs lost in 2009 and 700 in 2011.
