An urgent report from the BJ newsroom:
Sandy Levenson, former BJ copy edidtor, died Wednesday of cancer. Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. today at the Gordon Funeral Home, 1260 Collier Road.
Because Friday is the Fourth of July and the Jewish Sabbeth is on Saturday, the lfuneral was today.
It was not possible to get a classified obituary in the newspaper and a call to a reporter on the News Desk indicated there were no plans to do a news obit.
We have heard from one source that Sandy was in Washington, DC, to visit his son and died there. A quick check of this blog shows Sandy last attended a BJ Retirees lunch on August 8.
AWAITING OBITUARY INFO FROM FUNERAL HOME
A Note from Beth Hertz who attended the funeral with her husband David:
It was pretty crowded, especially considering that it was on such short notice. Quite a few Beacon people were there. Apparently Sandy had been admitted to hospice yesterday about noon and died several hours later. His cancer from several years ago had returned. I am not sure if it was in the same place or somewhere else in his body. He had been working at the Medina County Gazette until March, when his health started to decline. He had recently traveled to DC to see his son's new condo, even sharing the driving duties wtih this wife. So he was still active until very close to the end. His daughter and his son who is a rabbi both shared memories of their father. It was a very nice service. Burial was at Rose Hill.
