Bob Springer’s daughter off to quake-battered Nepal

Bob Springer, who retired as a Kent State academic adviser after 19 years at the Beacon Journal as a copy editor, reporter and, for his final 14 years, as the Op-ed editor and member of the editorial board, has a daughter, Kyla, heading for Nepal in the wake of that country’s worst earthquake in 80 years.

Bob reports:

“Kyla just found out she is headed to Nepal as part of Mercy Corps' relief efforts. She said she'll be leaving by Monday and staying there for 12 days or so, gathering victims' stories along with a photographer, to write about how Mercy Corps' regular team in Nepal of about 50 people is coping and helping in the disaster.
"This Dad, obviously, is concerned about her health and safety, and praying that all goes well. Kyla's soul is far bigger and better than mine.”
The Himalaya earthquake has killed more than 7,000 and injured twice that number. The epicenter was the Barpak village of the Gorkha district of Nepal.
Bob is married to Barbara Hipsman Springer, who retired in 2013 after 26 years in Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State.

He is a Southern Illinois journalism graduate who also worked at the Rocky Mountain News, the Denver Post and the weekly Center (Colorado) Post-Dispatch.

Daughter Anna Springer was Kent Roosevelt High salutatorian before heading off to Loyola University in Chicago a decade ago.
