Facebook
posting by former BJ Features editor and pet columnist Connie Bloom, who has
become a quilt art guru in Ohio circles since her retirement from the BJ:
I just completed this art quilt commission
for my dear friend Maura McEnaney, who gave it to her husband, Ken Krause, for
Christmas. They live in Medford, Mass.
Quilt art memorial to Belle |
The subject is Belle, a gorgeous lab mix
that Maura found tied to a fence in Firestone Park in Akron years ago. Belle
recently died and left a huge hole in their hearts.
The art quilt took about 6 weeks to make.
The writing on the table leg is what Ken would holler when he needed Belle to
come sit with him. Her eyes, fur and the designs all over her are literally
drawn in thread.
About 50 miles of it.
Ken's response:
On our first Christmas Day in 20 years without a dog in the household, our hearts were warmed by the addition of a fabulous Connie Bloom art quilt memorializing our beloved Belle (joining two other Connie originals, including a memorial to Clyde).
Ken's response:
Connie Bloom |
Ken
is a former BJ sports department resident. This is not the first time that
Connie made and sold quilt art to a former co-worker. In 2008 she did a memorial quilt art for BJ
reporter Kim McMahan’s late daughter, Brooke McMahan.
In
2010 Connie was juried into private studios by the Akron Area Arts Alliance at
Summit Art Space, which is next door to the Akron Art Museum at 140 E Market
Street.
The
former Garfield High School majorette is publisher/editor of QSDS (Quilt
Service Design Symposium), a quarterly online magazine about fabric art. She married
Bob Shields in 2008.
