Terry Oblander says he will begin a new career on Monday. He will begin working for an online newspaper covering Medina County. Terry doesn't expect to get rich writing stories for www.medinacountylife.com -- but who knows. Terry signed up for Social Security last Friday and should begin collecting benefits in September. So, a new Medina Count Life is beginning for Terry. Give us a couple of days and look in on how we're doing.

He is probably going to write boring-old people stuff
Terry Oblander was one of the unfortunate folks to be laid off at The Plain Dealer. He has a teenage son to see through high school and college. I'm glad he found something. It probably won't pay much, but it could lead to something else. The exposure won't hurt, no matter what he writes about. Gratuitous insults from people who hide behind the cloak of anonymity are nothing short of craven. I have never before commented but this time I must. Look at who reads this blog anyway - old folks. I am lucky enough to still have a decent job in print journalism. Many conscientious journalists at The Plain Dealer and elsewhere do our best every day to produce a relevant report as the economics worsen by the minute. The ill-natured, ill-mannered comments from people who retired comfortably, with full benefits and full pensions, as we make concessions at almost every turn, can be rather galling. Sorry for the screed, Harry.
Terry Oblander is a fine observer and a writer with an admirable clarity of style. I look forward to reading his new work.
Do not be concerned with anonymous comments. At least one-fifth of the people can't read and the best blogs don't reach 30 per cent of users. One half of those who log on, never see the comment on an article. One ha\f of those who notice it never read it. One-half of those who read it do not understand it. One-half of those who understand it are not interested in it. One-half of those who are interested in it don't know the person referred to in the article. One-half of those who do know him, don't believe the story. The rest who do believe it are not worth our friendship, so why worry about them?
Those of us who retired with "Full benefits" (which seem to fade almost yearly) and "full pensions" (meager as they are) are the old folks of journalism. As for the anonymous person, screw him, or her.
