Tom Cowman, in the BJ Composing room for 40 years, passed away
Thursday, September 12.
My thanks to retired printer Mike Herchek for tipping me off. I
missed the obituary in the BJ.
In 2005 Tom and wife Sandra had two children graduate from college
-- Alexis Jane Cowman, Kent State bachelor’s
in business administration, employed by J.M. Smucker in Orrville, and Paul
David Cowman, University of Akron cum laude bachelor’s in
marketing/advertising, employed as media coordinator at Malone Advertising.
Tom's other children are Tom, Jr., Kalem, Casey Wunsch and Coral Cowman.
Tom once was president of the International Typographers Union at
Ol’ Blue Walls. In 1971 Tom finished second to Bernie White in the BJ Chess
Tournament.
Tom’s sister, Joyce Cowman Latshaw, passed away in 2011. Their
parents were Jay and Wilda Cowman.

Thomas Jay "Tommy" Cowman Tom
Cowman, 69, went home to be with the Lord on September 12, 2019.
Tom was born in Akron, Ohio and lived in
Uniontown, OH. He graduated from Garfield High School and retired from the
Akron Beacon Journal where he worked for 40 years. Tom was a member of the
Akron Typographical Union.
His hobbies were golf, chess, reading,
talking stocks and politics. He enjoyed time with his family and getting a beer
with friends.
Preceded in death by Joyce Latshaw.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sandra of 39
years; sons, Thomas Cowman (Niki), Paul Cowman (Sue), Kaleb Cowman; daughters,
Casey Wunsch (Doug), Alexis Ries (Randall), Coral Cowman; grandchildren, Payton
Nanna, Juliana Ries, Aleah Ries, Randall Ries II, Layla Ries, Isabella Ries;
great grandchildren, Damian Minson; and sister, Carol Petz (Dale).
Friends and family will be received Monday,
from 5 to 9 p.m., at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 3553 Northdale Street NW,
UNIONTOWN, Ohio 44685 (one block NW of the square of 619 and Cleveland Ave.)
Funeral service will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at the funeral home.

Joyce L. Latshaw, 71, went home to be
re-united with her parents on September 9, 2011.
She was born on August 26, 1940 to the late Jay and Wilda Cowman. Joyce was a member of the First Evangelical Congregational Church and St. Paul Catholic Church. She was a lifelong resident of Firestone Park and a member of Firestone Park Silver Sneakers. She retired from the Akron Summit County Public Library. Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and yoga.
Survivors include her daughters, Loree (John) Conley and Cherie (Ken) Owens; brother, Thomas (Sandy) Cowman; sister, Carol (Dale) Petz; grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachael Conley, and Katie Coughlin; her best friends, Maryann Jarvis and Rosemary Soroka; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be Monday, 5 to 8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m., with Rev. Carl B. Dulin officiating. Entombment to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
