Hooks played Carlene Dobber for two seasons on "Designing Women," replacing the character played by Jean Smart. She sometimes provided the voice of Manjula Nahasapeemapetilon, the wife of convenience store owner Apu, on “The Simpsons” cartoon series.

Born in Decatur, Ga., Hooks moved to Florida during high school in 1973 when her father was transferred there for his job. She attended the University of West Florida in Pensacola, but did not earn her degree because she fell in love with acting.
