Cleveland picked for 2016 GOP convention
The site selection committee chose Cleveland to host the 2016
Republican National Convention.
The announcement was made, of course, on Fox
News, Rupert Murdoch’s cable channel mouthpiece for conservative and Republican
causes.
The GOP is considering June 28 or July 18 as the date for the mighty
maelstrom on Lake Erie.
Cleveland last hosted the Republican National Convention in 1936. Republicans
better hope the 2016 choice turns out better. In 1936 the Republicans nominated
Kansas Gov. Alf Landon, who lost to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the most
lopsided electoral landslide in American history.
Cleveland lost out to St. Paul, Minnesota for the 2008 convention
that nominated Sen. John McCain, who lost to President Barack Obama, 365-173, in the electoral count.
Even the Cavaliers don’t get blown out that badly.
Cleveland beat out Dallas, but still has to survive final
confirmation from the RNC’s national committee members, who will meet between
Aug. 6 and Aug. 9.
The 2012 GOP convention
pumped more than $200 million into the Tampa and Florida economies and drew
50,000 visitors.
