Kim Hone-McMahan, who followed in the hallowed paths of Fran Murphey and Jewell Cardwell as the Beacon Journal’s columnist, has a new book, “Vampire Dreams,” illustrated by Rachel Drapkin.

Keith Publications’ “Vampire Dreams” is a children's book about Alex, a mischievous little boy who sneaks into a movie starring a vampire and gets a visit from the monster in his dreams.

Previously, Kim wrote “Hoover and Honeybunch (Find Comfort in a Sometimes Scary World),” which was an attempt to help children deal with TV reports about school shootings, which since the books publication have risen to 74 such tragedies since Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut.

Kim is married to Chris McMahan.

The Brooke McMahan Memorial Invitational Swim Meet at the Ocasek Natatorium at the University of Akron honors their daughter, a 1999 Green High grad, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 23

Ohio art fabric icon and former BJ editor and pet columnist Connie Bloom memorialized Brooke by using Brooke’s clothing, jewelry and other items to create the fabric art.

Former Garfield High majorette Connie also did fabric art of Belle, their deceased Labrador mix dog, for former BJ reporter Maura McEnaney, who gave it to her husband, former BJ sports department leader Ken Krause, for Christmas. Ken and Maura live in Medford, Massachussetts.
