Today’s news organizations have a problem that few of us
encountered in our journalism careers: He or she pronouns for transgender
people.
Case in point: Pfc. Bradley Manning wants to be known as
Pfc. Chelsea Manning and live as a woman.
The Associated Press, New York Times and National Public
Radio will use “she.” The Washington Post will continue to use “he.” The New York Times will write “she,” but also “formerly known as
Pfc. Bradley Manning.”
This applies even if a person has not changed biological
characteristics, the entities said.
