Online advertising $$$ passes newspaper $$$


The gnat has become the 900-pound gorilla. Online advertising exceeded newspaper advertising revenue for the first time in 2010.

The Internet, despite cheaper rates, swallowed $25.8 billion. Newspapers fell a double-digit percentage to $22.8 billion. Magazines, though, rose to $20 billion.

It will get worse. S&P Equity Research says Online advertising will hit $28.4 billion in 2011.

  1. This milestone was inevitable, but one wonders how much bang for the buck online advertisers receive, even with billions of more potential eyes on their ads. USA Today recently published results of a Harris poll on "What adults ignore most." The results:

    Internet banner ads, 43%
    Internet search engine ads, 20%
    Television ads, 14%
    Radio ads, 7%
    Newspaper ads, 6%

    It would seem there is something to be said for information retention and print advertising.
