Gannett to cut 100 management jobs

Editor & Publisher reports that Gannett plans to eliminate about 100 management positions and overhaul its Community Publishing structure. U.S. Community Publishing President Robert Dickey made the announcement Tuesday in a letter to employees.

The cuts are in addition to the larger reduction the company announced in August. It trimmed its workforce by 1,000 positions through a series of buyouts and attrition in its newspaper division.

In Dickey's letter, first posted on Romenesko, he cites the impact this recession has had on Gannett's -- and indeed the entire industry's -- financial performance, affecting not only classifieds but all advertising categories.

Expenses at Gannett have outpaced revenue by "threefold," he wrote.

"Today, we are revising our overall organizational structure by eliminating approximately 100 department head positions. This new structure flattens our executive management ranks, enhances the role of our group sites and aligns corporate resources with the field as we aggressively pursue our print and digital strategies to deliver what readers and advertisers want," he wrote.

Gannett is offering severance packages to the affected managers.

Ohio newspapers owned by Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper publisher, include the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum,Chillicothe Gazette, Cincinnati Enquirer, Coshocton Tribune, Frempont News-Messenger, Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, Mansfield News Journal, Marion Star, Newark Advocate, Port C;linton News Herald, Zanersville Times Recorder and the Newspaper Network of Central Ohio.
