Study shows Ohio population getting older at faster rate

COLUMBUS, O. (AP) – A new study shows Ohio'spopulation is quickly getting older.

The Ohio Public Expenditure Council says the number of people turning 65 will increase from 14 people a day now to 119 by 2012.

Demographers with the research group say the trend is going to strain the state's economy, property tax base, and health care and retirement systems.

Council President Rick Yocum says that's a disaster for state and local budgets, with no obvious solution.

The study predicts that during the next decade, retirees will outnumber those entering the work force by 750,000. And by 2030, the state's median age is expected to rise from 36 to 40.
