There are a lot of familiar names on this 1959 Beacon Journal Directory of Employes. In earlier times there was no telephone directory of employees printed in booklet form. This one was printed on one newspaper size broadsheet about 15 by 23 inches. This copy was revised on September 15, 1959. Our thanks to Calvin Deshong who provided the sheet to us We will try to reprint the list of employes for each department starting this month with the 144 employees listed in the composing room. The list begins with William J. Church, foreman, and then continues alphabetically to the end with Donald H. Zarle. BJ directory from 1959

Even though I didn’t come to the BJ till 1968, there are a lot of memories for me in this list. Sadly, too many have departed for that Great Newspaper in the Sky.

Beacon folks flocked to his Poor Bill’s complex on Siesta Key off Sarasota. By the time my late wife Monia and I started staying every February at Sea Castle, on the beach with a parking lot that faced the former (by then) Bill’s place, the doctors Bill managed the other complexes for had bought him out and changed the name.

Bob once told me that he thought I was the best Makeup Man since Hal Taylor. Then he said, “No, you’re even better than Hal Taylor.” I consider that the greatest compliment I ever got at the Beacon. In retirement, Bob also told me, “Just hit the damn ball!” when he was in a golf group behind me at Brookledge Golf Course in Cuyahoga Falls. Bob liked to play fast, and he played so well that par was not unusual for Bob. He tore up the seniors leagues every year. Once a boxer, too.

During my Siesta Key stays every February, Don would tidy up around the Sea Castle pool and tell me the latest country that he and his ladyfriend visited, or were going to visit. He drove a darn nice convertible, too. And I understand his ladyfriend’s house was impressive.

Eikleberry, Tom: Captain Ike they called him at Fairlawn Lanes in the Printcraft Bowling League.
White, Tommy: John, didn't he also hail from West Virginia??
I don't know if Tommy White was from West Virginia. I just know that Tom Melody and Scott Bosley were. And fellow WVU Journalism grads.
