Congratulations to the Zips
Congratulations to the University of Akron Zips who won the Mid-American Conference championship Thursday night at Ford Field in Detroit.
Junior quarterback Luke "Cool Hand" Getsky hit senior receiver Domenik Hixon on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left to play. Senior place-kicker Jason Swiger then made the extra point to give the Zips a 31-30 win over Northern Illinois.
If was a great game to watch. Hixson, Akron's No. 1 receiver this season, who had been on the sidelines most of the fourth quarter with cramps and maybe nausea, came in just for the one play, the 36-yard pass to him that he caught in the end zone. It reminded me of Doug Flutie's famous "Hail Mary" pass against Miami and Bernie Kosar.
Akron goes back to Detroit in 4 weeks for its first bowl game ever.
Fear the Roo!!!
Plus, Akron even has the right colors, gold and blue, as in West Virginia U. Ahem!
