Cinda Williams Chima, a former clinical dietician who once worked in the BJ classified phone room (1969-78), is the author of “Shadowcaster,” #6 on the New York Times’ childen’s best-seller list.

“Shadowcaster” centers on Alyssa ana'Raisa, reluctant princess heir to the Gray Wolf throne of Fells, who is forced into a battle for her future queendom.

Cinda writes fiction novels for young adults.

Cinda wrote:

“I often tell people that I worked my way through school with a job that turned out to be the very best preparation to be a writer.

“Working at the BJ was life-changing for me.”
Cinda is part of an amazing triumvirate of siblings in the Williams family.

There is BJ Advertising Art retiree Mike Williams (BJ 1968-2012), who travels around South and Central America with his wife of 40 years, Jane, after 44 years at Ol’ Blue Walls.

Mike and Jane have two sons, independent trucker Nathan Williams, and chemical engineer Trevor Williams.

Mike retired from the BJ in 2012.

Another Williams sibling is Cinda’s fraternal twin (not identical but born on the same day from the same womb), BJ information technology retiree Linda Williams Torson, married to Akron-Summit County Metroparks retiree Tim Torson.

Linda was with the Beacon Journal for 42 years and was so good with computers that she joined the BJ’s IT team to usher in the new technology that hit Ol’ Blue Walls in the late 1970s.

I did the same thing from the newsroom side. Linda and I both worked with the late Ken Wright on the Composing end to smooth the transition for everyone in the building.

Linda’s other loves besides Tim are horses and dogs, including the national Dock Dog jumping competition involving Linda and Tim's Labradors.

Ester Smith passes away

Ester “Smitty” Smith, who worked at the BJ for many years before he retired, passed away Saturday, April 8.

Ester Smith
He’s on the 1981 BJ employee directory that Advertising Makeup retiree Mike Williams provided for me.

Later, Mike informed me that Smitty was part of Tommie Cook's paperhandlers. Smitty also was involved in the United Way campaign at the BJ and was pretty good with a bowling ball, too.

Smitty’s obituary:

Mr. Ester “Smitty” Smith

Mr. Ester “Smitty” Smith of Akron, Ohio died on Saturday, April 8, 2017 after a long illness.

Smitty was born in Oxford, Miss. on December 28, 1944 to the late Pastor Ester Moss and Catherine Smith. After Smitty graduated, he left Oxford, Miss and joined the U.S. Army.

He then started working for the Akron Beacon Journal. He worked for many years until he retired.

After retiring he loved spending time with his friends and family and having a good time. He loved going shopping and doing yard work with his wife, Shirley. He was a very patient and loving man. May God continue to keep him under His wings.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lewis Smith; and sister, Marie Smith Pringle. Smitty leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Shirley Foster Smith; son, Edward Smith; and daughter, Crystal Smith; grandchildren, Jason Culver, Jaylyn Culver, Justin Smith and Shayla Smith; brothers, Rev. Harry Smith, Charles Smith, of Oxford, Miss., Preston Smith, of Memphis, Tenn.; sisters, Modupe Ogunyemi, of Oakland, Calif., Cassandra Porter, of Oxford, Miss.; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Service will be held Friday April 14, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Stewart &

Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 W. Thornton St., Akron, OH 44307, Rev. Harry Smith officiating. Interment Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 12 Noon until time of service. Procession will form at 1507 Washburn St., Akron, OH 44307 and condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 8057, Akron, OH 44320.

Former BJ and current PD pop critic Mark Dawidziak, author of “Everything I Needed to Know I Learned From The Twilight Zone,” will premiere his “Twilight Show” on stage at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 13 with wife Sara Showman.

They will be converting genius Rod Serling’s “Twilight Zone” as a stage “journey into the wondrous land of imagination.” I can’t imagine how Mark will pull this one off at the Nordonia Hills Library.

“Everything … Twilight Zone” is the 15th book that Mark has written or edited. He’s gaining on the prolific Terry Pluto, who wrote chapters to his many books while riding an airplane to Cavalier games. Terry is closing in on 30 books.

Mark and Sara’s Mostly Literary Theater has performed shows tied to Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and the Civil War in the area and, in the cast of Twain, around the country including places where Twain himself once trod the land.

As for “Twilight Zone” the stage play, Mark tells me “we'll be performing this one many more times over the next few months in Northeast Ohio. Just as soon as we get a couple under our belt.”

Mark lives in Cuyahoga Falls with wife Sara and daughter Becky and various animals.

“Twilight Zone” aired from 1959 to 1964, but lives forever in the minds of those who watched the crafty Cincinnatian’s chilling life lessons.

Serling once said, ““Every writer is a frustrated actor who recites his lines in the hidden auditorium of his skull.”

In Mark’s case, his auditoria are both in his skull and in his stage performances. In athletics parlance, he’s a two-sport player.

Pluto was at the Plain Dealer (1979-84), then the BJ (1985-2007) and then back to the PD (2007-today).

Cheryl walks into Dr. Barsan’s office . . .

Cheryl Scott Sheinin should be in the Guiness Book of World Records.

She first showed up in the dentist office of Dr. Barsan. When he retired, Cheryl switched to his son, Dr. Bob Barsan.

Cheryl Scott Sheinin
Now that Dr. Bob is retiring, she’ll be showing up for Bob’s brother, Dr. Dave Barsan.

The only constant in that office, besides the sound of dental work, is Cheryl walking into the place.

Cheryl retired after 45 years in the BJ Finance Department. Husband Neil Sheinin is a former BJ staffer who came up with a novel way to save on buying gifts: He married Cheryl on September 29, her birthday. One gift for two occasions. Clever guy.

By the way, he’s been getting away with single-dipping two milestone events for 37 years.
Everyone at BJ in 1981

Advertising Makeup retiree Mike Williams, between visits to Mexico and South America, provided me with this 1981 BJ employees directory.

It’s in alphabetical order, regardless of department, so you can see if your name or the names of your former co-workers are listed.
This is everyone who was in the building during JSK's final year.

These are the people who were at Ol’ Blue Walls when John S. Knight would saunter to his corner office after his winterizing in his Miami Herald office and a stopover for the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in April.

Read, enjoy, get as nostalgic as I did. Too many, alas, are not just gone from 44 E. Exchange Street, but have gone to That Great Newspaper in the Sky.
