MIKE CULL PASSES AWAY

Mike Cull, once BJ Columbus bureau chief with Bill Hershey and Suzanna Gussler alongside him, passed away at the age of 78 in Columbus.

Egan-Ryan Funeral Home in Columbus is handling Mike’s final arrangements as it did for Mike’s father, Northwestern Mutual Insurance agent Robert Cull, in 2009 and for Mike’s brother, Stephen, in 2018. Mike’s mother, also deceased, is Margaret “Peggy” Cull.

Mike’s other siblings are Kathleen Cavello, Robert Cull, Kevin Cull, Sean Cull and their other sister, Margaret “Midge.”

Mike once covered City Hall for the BJ and worked for years for the state in communications jobs. And as an Ohio State Journalism School adjunct faculty member.

Hershey, the man who never met a dog he didn’t want to adopt and among the best and bravest reporters on Pat Englehart’s State Desk (he once called in a story with a gun pointed at him by mine union organizer), tipped me off.

Several years ago Mike was part of a BJ reunion that included Hershey, Jim Ricci, Mike Clary, Larry Froelich, Jim Toms, John and wife Georgia MacDonald and the late Don Bandy, an amazing rewrite man who used a phone and his typing fingers to make many a reporter look like a genius because they called in the information for Don to do work his magic.

I had several reunions with Don on Siesta Key, Florida at the annual February rental my late wife My Mona Lisa and I called home away from Ohio’s winter. And at his Bradenton home maybe 15 miles north on the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Don, who had 10 siblings, passed away in 2011 and was at the BJ from 1969 till his 1997 retirement a year after Fran Murpey and I retired from 44 E. Exchange Street on the same day in 1996.

Cull in his tribute to Don in 2011 called him Banderoo.

Mike’s obituary:

Michael Brian “Mike” Cull, age 78, died September 28th, 2022 at his home in Clintonville following a lengthy illness.

Preceded in death by his parents Robert T. Cull and Margaret Ann “Peggy” Cull (nee Hedges),  sister Kathleen Cull Cavello and brother Stephen J. Cull.   He is survived by his daughter Rachel E. Cull and son Matthew T. Cull (Carolyn), grandchildren Rebecca, Abraham and Charlotte, his siblings Robert Cull (Mary), Kevin Cull (Rose), Margaret “Midge” Cull, Sean Cull (Mary Jo), brother-in-law Dominic Cavello (Sarah Mazer), many cousins and nieces and nephews.

Michael was an alumnus of St. Charles Preparatory School (1962) and The Ohio State University (1966).  Following three years in the U.S. Army (1966-1969), Michael received a Master’s degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism (1971).

Michael began his career as a journalist in Missouri reporting for the Columbia Missourian and Kansas City Star before joining the Akron Beacon Journal (“ABJ”) in 1972. While at the ABJ, he reported on state and legislative matters, as well as interest stories such as the “Great Blizzard” of 1978, Governor Richard Celeste’s campaign, the Hustler Magazine court case, and the Mansfield prison escape.

Upon departing the ABJ, Michael headed communications for the Ohio State Treasurer and taught journalism classes at the Ohio State University, before accepting a role in communications with the Ohio Dept. of Transportation.

In retirement, he maintained his generosity to family and friends which included his famous biscuit drops, volunteering at election polling locations and working the IC festival.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in his memory to Saint Charles Preparatory School, Attn: Dan Tarpy, 2010 East Broad St. Bexley, OH 43209.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6th at Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, 403 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43215 and tip a drink in Mike’s honor from 12–4 p.m. on Friday, Oct 7th at the India-Oak Bar & Grill, 590 Oakland Park Ave, Columbus 43214.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Michael at 11:00am on Friday, October 7th at Immaculate Conception Church, 414 E. N. Broadway, Columbus 43214.

35th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY FOR KATIE BYARD CARNEY AND JIM CARNEY

Jim Carney and Katie Byard Carney will celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary on Thursday, September 29.

Katie posted:

Happy 35th @legumecarney! Thank you for all the joy - being such a great dad, Papaw and uncle and dog daddy; the laughs; morning coffee; hunts for my glasses and keys; walks; errands (with and without me), advice when I wanted and also when I didn’t think I needed it, but did; Jimmy-made eggs, veggie burgers, goulashes and French martinis (and you don’t even drink!); your music and movie knowledge, your patience when I just want to watch an old Perry Mason or Law & Order; your adventuring with me; your love of interviewing strangers; your reminders about sending thank yous; your accounting skills; you love of my family snd friends;your patience with my sports illiteracy; your love of Swensons, Skyway, DeVitis; your world view; your generosity, your kindness; your letting me be me; your patience (sometimes) when I want to linger at the restaurant or museum; your mad photography and writing skills; your handmade cards, your decorated rocks, - am I at 35 things yet? That was the goal with this post! Most of all, I thank you for all the unconditional love, bringing your boys into my life (and now their families) and for being you. #luckinourheads

Jim and Katie both were Beacon Journal reporters hired by Tim Smith and Keith McKnight. Fellow reporter Bill Hershey, never without a pet dog, put Katie’s rental car on his credit card to get her to Akron for the interview. Bill and Katie both worked in the BJ’s Columbus bureau.

Jim also dabbled in being on local radio, even after his retirement from the BJ. Katie is into drag boat racing.

Katie recalls that wedding day in 1987:

“It was a beautiful fall day in Richfield. Jim and I decided it would be fun to dress up like a couple from the 50s (we were ahead of the curve when it came to themed events!), make Patrick, Will and Michael dress up like little maitre d’s, enjoy the evening with a bunch of friends in the upper room of the Richfield Tavern, share too many cocktail weenies with the group, cut a cake from the fab Budd's Bakery in Akron (decorated with Mickey and Minnie Mouse) and say ‘I do.’ Other stuff from Common Book of Prayer, thank u very much.

"Miss those who were there and are no longer with us. Blessed for those still supporting us and new friends we have made along the way. Blessed to share my life with Jimmy.”

Then they zipped off to their New Orleans honeymoon.

I encountered Jim more than once when the daffodils were in bloom at Summit Metro Park’s Daffodil Trail in Furnace Run on Brush Road in Richfield. We both are daffy about daffodils.

DON'T MISS ROGER MEZGER'S SLIDE SHOW OF "NEWS FACES AT THE BJ"

As usual, Roger did a fantastic job of revolving photos of those lucky enough to work at the BJ, lining up them in order of their first year at 44 E. Exchange Street.

I was there 1969-1996. Photo not flattering but camera can only show what's there.

If you want to spend 12 minutes seeing the revolving photos then go to:

(1) Beacon Journal Newsroom Alumni | Facebook

and scroll till you see the "New Faces" heading. 12 minutes well spent. Hall of Fame of BJ workers.

RETIREES' REACTIONS AT THE 2022 BJ NEWSROOM REUNION

BJ retirees react to 2022 reunion

Ann Sheldon Mezger:

The very talented Andrea Louie made the gorgeous centerpiece for our reunion cake table (there's at least one photo of it on this thread). She then added little branches where tags could be hung and invited folks to "Write a word, leave a message, share a memory of the ABJ".

Here's what the tags (some signed, some not, and a couple with signatures I couldn't decipher) said:

Great gathering always! – Chuck and Lisa Ayers

I got paid to have an opinion.

Thanks for the fond memories. – Carla Davis, copy editor

It’s taken 30 years, but I finally recovered from being cussed out by Fran Murphey enroute to “Morning Exchange” in Cleveland. I was her driver and coordinator. – Carla Davis

Remember the great relationships and friends made at ABJ. It will carry you through rough times.

One of my favorite places to have worked. Lots of memories! – Pam McCarthy

Hello! Let’s rock.

You were my home and my family. Thanks for the love. – Regina Brett

That time Thom Fladung did a training and everyone wanted to hire him on the spot. – Mitch McKenney.

44 forever. – Larry Pantages

What a great place to grow up. . .and never stop.

There are places I remember all my life. Thanks for everything ABJ. -- Thrity Umrigar

Andrea, beautiful arrangement. The memories we cherish. The good times we cry about. So privileged to be a part of it. – Jolene Limbacher

I met Fran Murphey when I shook her awake in the parking deck. I thought she might be dead. She was P.O.’d. – Kathy Gardner

Gathering around the computer screen waiting to hear we won a Pulitzer – again! Such amazing talent and proud to be part of it.

BJ. Fun place to “work.” – John Olesky

ABJ – where I learned everything I needed to know for all that followed. – Andrea Louie

So glad I was there during the Golden Age.

By the grace of God and the 4th estate and Bill Hershey, I got to work at the Beacon – Katie Byard Carney

The Beacon Journal. Where great people produced great journalism. – Greg Gardner

Great to see the wrinkles and smiles of my ABJ family. – David Hertz

So glad I got to be reunited with my Beacon friends. – Elaine Guregian

On the BJ Newsroom Alumni Facebook page Thrity Umrigar posted:

I was so overjoyed at seeing so many beloved faces that I completely forgot to take pictures— but I did want to say this. If I was a multi millionaire I would open a newsroom and hire all of you. But instead of actually producing a daily newspaper we would just get together every day and hang out and eat lots of good food and then go home and come back the next day and do it all over again. I will thank my lucky stars until I die for having worked with such wonderful people.
